Background Noise

Unlike the modern myth of St. Nicholas slapping/punching Arius, this story about St. Louis de Montfort in a tavern brawl is contemporary well attested.

St. Louis de Montfort wore a blue collar in honor of Our Lady, instead of the typical white collar. At that time, the style of the priest’s collar was different. Today in the West the standard collar is the Roman collar. The cassock remains the official dress for priests.

St. Louis is remembered most today for his classic work True Devotion to Mary.

Our main source for this story is Wisdom’s Fool, by Fr. Eddy Doherty

Saint Louis de Montfort by Mary Fabyan Windeatt is a good biography for children and younger teenagers
