The Capone family moved from Salerno, Italy, to Brooklyn, New York, with James and another brother, Ralph. Seven more children soon followed, including Frank and little Al.

The oldest of the Capone children, James ran away from home at 16 to join the circus, where he changed his name to that of William S. Hart, who was a Western silent film star. He tried to cover up his Italian heritage and claimed to be a cowboy from Oklahoma. He also claimed to have served in the Army, but there are no records of his alleged service. As a prohibition agent, he made national news for his daring exploits.
